We went apple picking over a month ago and I know a lot of people are going apple AND pumpkin picking at this time of the season. I made this pie almost three weeks ago, but I haven’t had a chance to put the photos into a blog post until today. My goal was to try one new fall dessert every week, but I haven’t held up to that goal. I wasn’t even going to blog about them, I was just going to bake and eat! Bake and eat! Ok, sorry… getting off track. 🙂 Last year I made candy popcorn balls (see post HERE) and they were OH so good. I thought, why not make a candy apple pie? I wasn’t sure how it’d turn out, but it was pretty tasty alright (as my daughter would say).
It seems that apple pie recipes are pretty simple, the bulk of the ingredients are the APPLES. You will need approx. 6-7 apples, red hot candies (in the candy section of your grocer), sugar, flour and two refrigerated pie crusts. I added some walnuts, but nuts are optional.
Peel and slice them apples
Mix together the apples, flour, sugar, red hots and walnuts in a bowl. Spread your pie plate with one of the pie crusts and dump the apple pie mixture into the crust.
Then, take your top pie crust and use small cookie cutters to cut out shapes. I did two different leaf shapes. This is my favorite part of baking a pie, making these little cut outs to add to the top of the pie. I know, it’s the kid in me. 🙂 And, you can’t beat sprinkling them with a little dusting of sugar… I may have or may not have eaten one or two. 😉
AND, just like that you have yourself a beautiful candy apple pie that is just waiting to be baked.
This is definitely a twist off of a normal apple pie. Last year I made an apple pie with a salted caramel sauce (see post HERE) and it was delicious. I must say, this pie was delicious, too and had a nice cinnamon taste to it from the little candies. My kids were intrigued by it too, which made it even more fun to bake…
The candies really do melt while this pie bakes and it gives the pie a beautiful red color and a wonderful taste.
Of course, we had a ton of red hot candies leftover and the kids snacked on them for days. This pie was a lot of fun to make with the kids and I hope you are your family enjoy it too! I really enjoy trying a few new recipes each fall and this one is definitely one I will make again sometime.
Here is the recipe:
Candy Apple Pie
