I’ve had a little soft lump/cyst whatever you want to call it on the back of my toe next to my big toe for several months. It doesn’t have any discoloration nor does it hurt, so I sort of figured it would go away. Nor, did I think it deserved a doctor appointment all on its own.
So, I went to my dermatologist for my yearly mole check and decided to mention it to her. She referred me to a foot surgeon (EEK!) which I had an appointment with yesterday. He did an xray on my foot and also tried to remove some of the liquid inside of it (if there was any), but could not get anything out so he is sort of ruling out a ganglion cyst. So, that leads us to the next action, which is surgery to remove it. He doesn’t think it is anything serious, and said in his 20 years of being a foot surgeon he has only had it turn out to be something very serious one time. That makes me feel a little better, but its still hard not to worry :(((
I have to take two days off work for surgery, and wear a special walking shoe that will allow me to wear a ‘fluffy’ bandage. After 10 days I can wear my regular shoes and the stitches should be out.
My surgery will be two weeks before the two races I want to do, Warrior Dash and the Halloween Go! 10K. I am going to keep training up till surgery, then probably not run again until the day of the 10K. I *think* I will be ok to race still, as long as the wound is closed and not giving me too much pain. I’ll be sure to ask him at my post-operation visit to see what he recommends. Right now I am going to rule Warrior Dash out, just because with all the mud and dirt I am not sure if it would be best for a post surgery wound. It just depends how quickly it heals after the surgery on what I will be able to do and what the doctor will suggest.
What a bummer. My main concern over the races though is that everything is OK. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
