Hi everyone!! I am going to be taking some breaks off and on this summer from posting on Thursday Fashion Files, so you may see a guest poster a couple times a month here until the fall. This week I have Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge here to share her Dressing Up Denim Overalls post. I have known Shelbee for several years and she has such a great sense of style. She tends to share more edgy styles and she has the most extensive collection of accessories, shoes, etc. We are around the same age, are stay at home moms/bloggers and both still spend a lot of our time parenting. Shelbee and I have had some similar styles lately on our blogs and she shares those below. Be sure to stop by to visit her on her blog HERE and Instagram HERE.
Hi all! I am super excited to be guest posting for Carrie today while she is taking some time off to enjoy her summer. In case you don’t know me, I’m Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge and Carrie and I have been good blogging buddies for quite a few years now. Since today is the Thursday Fashion Files Link Party, I wanted to share a fun style post with you.
Recently, Carrie and I have been in this little game of fashion ping pong when it comes to our denim overalls. We always seem to be thinking right along the same lines with how we have styled them. The very first time Carrie shared her overalls, she had styled them for winter with a puff sleeve sweater and beanie hat. I remember commenting on that post how much we were thinking alike because I had just photographed an outfit in my overalls where I wore a sweater and a winter beanie which I shared just a few weeks after Carrie’s post.
The second time she shared her denim overalls, Carrie styled them with a snakeskin print blouse which is so cool and very reminiscent of the way I had styled my very first pair of denim overalls with a snakeskin print cropped top. You see that great minds clearly share great style!
When I got to thinking about what kind of outfit to share on Carrie’s blog today, I knew I wanted to do something really crazy and over the top with denim overalls. A few months ago, I got this idea in my head to combine my overalls with some really super dressed up pieces like loads of pearls and stiletto heels. I wasn’t sure if it would work or not, but we never know until we try.
So I went for it.
I struggled a little bit with finding the right top. I wanted something a little bit sassy, probably cropped, maybe sheer, and I literally tried on about 15 different tops until I settled on a sheer half top from Torrid. I put on some black stilettos and layered on basically all of the pearl necklaces I own. My overalls are a bit oversized and while they do have belt loops, I don’t think I had ever considered actually putting a belt through those loops. But I needed some waist definition if I was going to make this style work. So I cinched the belt tight so I could sort of blouse out the bib part of the overalls thereby creating the appearance of a waistline under all the bulky denim.
It still wasn’t all that great and from the backside it kind of looks like I might have a saggy loaded diaper in my pants!
Kimono to the rescue!
Since I had already added pearly white and silver accessories to this look, I grabbed my long ivory kimono with silver sequined details along the hem. Backside problem solved.
Overall, it is kind of a crazy outfit combination. But I do love to combine unlikely and contradictory pieces into my outfits because it is very reflective of my personality. I am quite contradictory in many areas of my life and I kind of like that way! Plus my closet is my creative playground and I like to keep my imagination running wild in there.
Would you ever style denim overalls with pearls or other dressy pieces?
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee
Hope everyone has a wonderful Thursday! I can’t wait to see everyones outfits for this week!
