I’m back to share my second San Diego recap post where we visited the USS Midway and then had a delicious tea time at Shakespeare’s Corner Shoppe & Afternoon Tea. I noticed while we were in San Diego, the climate was warm enough that they didn’t really have any grass or annual flowers. This succulent wall was next to our hotel and YES, they were real succulents!
Our hotel was along the bay and within walking distance of the USS Midway Museum. We had our travel agent set us up with a ‘Skip the Line’ pass and we walked right onboard at the 10:00 a.m. opening time. Here is a little history about it: The USS Midway is an aircraft carrier, formerly of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class. Commissioned 8 days after the end of World War II, Midway was the largest ship in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal.
My husband and son really enjoyed touring the USS Midway. It was huge! It was basically a city on the sea!
On the main floor, they had some planes you could sit inside.
Touring the floors was really interesting and they had a full operating room, dentist, private and regular dining halls, etc.
Going on top of the flight deck helped you to realize how tall/high up the USS Midway in relation to everything else around you. Brian and Nathan went on the control tower tour, but Autumn and I opted out and took some fun photos on the deck and headed back to the hotel a little early.
Here is one of the photos we took on top of the deck of the USS Midway.
We were really hungry after leaving the USS Midway, so we grabbed lunch (and I grabbed an iced coffee) from Ryan Bros. Coffee across from our hotel. It was delicious!
We had a long break in-between the USS Midway and our 4:00 p.m. tea time, so we Door Dashed Salt & Straw Ice Cream. There are numerous reviews for this place and they’re all positive! It was SO good! Autumn and I got the honey lavender ice cream, it hit the spot!
I am a sucker for a good afternoon tea and I knew I wanted to try out a place while we were in San Diego. I found the PERFECT afternoon tea place for us at Shakespeare’s Corner Shoppe & Afternoon Tea. It was a short Uber drive away and the place was very charming! They have a wide selection of teas, such as this Paddington Bear tea!
They had a covered outdoor porch and the table was set with real flowers inside our pitcher of water, adorable china and flowers. The let us sample their tea of the month, which was fun! It was the
China Rose Petal: China Congou black tea is blended with pink rose petals to give a mellow, sweet tasting tea with a wonderfully perfumed floral aroma.
Our starter was a Stilton Port Pate & Beetroot Toast Point.
We got a couple photos of ourselves. As you can tell, we are all a little sunburned! The San Diego heat kind of surprised us on our first day after such a cool morning.
Oh, it was so good! One of my all time favorite tea times! Here is what we had (everything was SO good and they had vegetarian options):
The Savouries:
Ham with Mustard Coleslaw Finger Sandwich
Coronation Chicken Salad Finger Sandwich
Cucumber & Thyme Cream Cheese Finger Sandwich
Roast Beef & Horseradish Chive Roll Up Vol-Au-Vent
Capresee Quiche with Balsamic Drizzle
Mini Sausage Roll with Branston Pickle
Sweets:
Raisin Scone with Double Devon Cream
Our Signature Blackberry Apple Jam & Lemon Curd
Strawberry Sponge with Rose Petal Buttercream
Iced Lavender Tart
Shortbread Teapot Biscuit
That’s a wrap! I’ll have 2 more recap posts for San Diego and then a final Disneyland/California Adventure post. I have been really busy this summer, so I haven’t had nearly as much time to spend on the blog with the teens home. I hope you all understand and in the fall we’ll get back to some regular posts! I will be taking a week off from the blog in July and another week off in August. I’ll give you a heads up before I take those breaks. I really want to enjoy some downtime this summer and not be working away on this blog (which will take ALL my time if I’ll let it!) all the time. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this post and I’ll be back on Friday with a Friday Five post!
