Last week, on the 4th of July, I had the kids make the ice cream in a bag recipe that was in the Family Fun magazine this month. Here are the kids next to the ingredients, HOWEVER the cornstarch is NOT supposed to be in this photo. SOMEHOW it got staged into the photo. Who would do such a thing?! ;o)- It was really for our mixed berry pie that I made to go with the ice cream in a bag. Yum, yum!
You start with a small sandwich bag that you can seal, and you add sugar, half and half and vanilla.
Then you put salt, and cold ice cubes in the larger bag before placing the smaller bag inside it. This was the kids FAVORITE part, putting the cold ice cubes in their bigger bag. However, they started to fight over the ice cubes (see how serious Nathan looks)… I don’t think they realize yet just how many ice cubes are in the freezer! LOL!
Then, shake the bags until the ice cream mixture hardens. This is a LOOOONG 5 minutes. Why is it so long? because the ice is heavy and the kids didn’t shake theirs very long- so I had to do their bags! Here is Autumn’s attempt at shaking her bag, she threw it down on the table. Heheh. Nathan did his pretty good for awhile until he asked me to take over for him. It is quite a work out, let me tell you!

Ice Cream in a Bag (taken from Family Fun)
Combine 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 cup half and half, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract in a pint-size ziplock bag and seal it tightly. Place 1/2 cup table salt in a gallon-size bag, then fill it halfway with ice cubes. Place the sealed smaller bag inside as well, and seal the larger bag. Shake the bags until the ice cream mixture hardens, about 5 minutes. (Feel the small bag to determine when it’s done.) Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. Serves 1.
