Today I’m sharing my second Maui post. While we were there, we ventured away from our resort to do an 11 hour Road to Hana tour and we took an Uber over to a famous breakfast and pie place (plus, there was a fruit stand next door!). If you missed out on my first post last week, I share how much we loved staying at the Hyatt Maui Resort and you can see what I wore in Maui in last week’s Thursday Fashion Files.
We had a driver pick us and several others up at our resort. We headed to a breakfast place and enjoyed a delicious continental breakfast before starting out with our driver for the 11 hour tour to Hana.
The reason the tour took 11 hours is because the road leading up to Hana is extremely windy (curvy) and the speed limit is 25 mph and there can be a lot of traffic, especially at one lane bridges. Our tour included a trip all the way around Hana and the back side coming down, whereas most will take it up to Hana and then take the main road back down the same way. Parts of the road were unpaved and without guard rails, so it was a little scary (especially if you don’t like heights). However, our driver knew what he was doing and drives this road 5 days a week. There is no cell signal for most of the trip though, so that made me a little nervous! I highly recommend taking motion sickness medicine if you have any trouble with motion sickness at all. The photo above is from our first stop. So beautiful! It is the Kaumahina State Park.
At this same stop, there was a lady weaving headbands, baskets and more with ti leaves.
We stopped at this little hole in the wall (Aunty Sandy’s) for some banana bread. I wasn’t expecting much… but…
This loaf of banana bread was the BEST banana bread I have EVER had! It was warm, big chunks of banana in it… so good! I wish I had bought more loaves of it!
Next we stopped at Haiku and saw the peninsula.

There was a miniature pony and our driver got out an apple and fed him. So cute!
The walls of this church survived a tsunami in 1945. They had to rebuild the roof and interior. There is also a graveyard outside the church.

Here is a waterfall we saw on our way up to Hana.
Brian and I both agreed that seeing the black sand beach was our favorite part of the entire day. The waves were really calm.
Once we got up to Hana… there wasn’t much to see!! Hana is a really small town with just the basics. I was expecting a little more, but I guess the journey there and seeing raw nature is the true treat of going up to Hana and back. We got a picnic style lunch with a sandwich, pineapple and a slice of banana bread for lunch. We ate it under some tents outside.
We continued back on the road and we saw some wild goats. Brian told me I could finally gave my pet goat I’ve always wanted and we should take one of them home. Ha! 😉
When taking the back road down from Hana, we saw some amazing views from up high. The water was so blue!
We saw a few cars that had crashed off the cliff (not that particular day that we were out!). There is no guardrail and thankfully our driver was careful and safe, but others that aren’t familiar with the road or that take it too fast can get themselves into trouble.
Our Pie Adventure
We didn’t rent a car in Maui, so we thought it’d be fun to venture out and check out a popular breakfast and pie place that another blogger and his wife had recommenced to us (we met this lovely couple when we were at the Haven conference last year). The name of the place was Leoda’s and it was about 15 minutes from our resort.

I got banana pancakes with macadamia nuts and it was oh, so good!
Then we each ordered a pie and shared them. Brian got the Pineapple Mac Nut (think an apple pie, but with pineapple instead) and I got the Chocolate Mac Nut. Both were so good!
I was excited to see a fruit stand next door, so we checked it out! The pineapple is so good in Hawaii.

We brought home some of these macadamia nuts, so good!
